Mooa Kang is an artist who explores multilayered identity through the accumulation of color. Using wood as an organic support, she applies thousands of layers of mineral pigment, known as bunchae, to develop a body of work that blur the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and furniture, bringing flatness and three-dimensionality into dialogue. Working between Korea and the United States, Mooa articulates identity not as a fixed self but as an entity shaped over time through the accumulation of relationships and embodied experiences. Drawing from organic forms found in nature and the colors of Korean aesthetics, she defines her artistic language as “Korean Art Nouveau,” extending fluid lines and vitality into a contemporary ontological perspective.
Mooa holds an MDes in Interior Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design(RISD) as well as an MFA and a BFA in Korean Painting, both from Ewha Womans University. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the RISD Nature Lab, the National Library of Korea, and Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital.
무아 강은 강렬한 색채의 중첩을 통해 정체성의 다층적 구조를 탐구하는 작가이다. 나무라는 유기적 지지체 위에 수천 겹의 분채 물감을 쌓아올려 하나의 몸을 형상화하는 그녀의 작업은 회화, 조각, 가구의 경계를 넘나들며 평면성과 입체성이 교차하는 조형 구조를 보여준다. 한국과 미국을 오가며 활동해온 무아는 개인의 정체성이 고정된 자아가 아니라 관계와 경험이 오랜 시간 켜켜이 쌓여 형성된 존재임을 시각적으로 드러낸다. 자연에서 발견되는 유기적 곡선과 한국적 색채 감각을 결합한 그녀는 자신의 작업 세계를 ‘코리안 아르 누보(Korean Art Nouveau)’라 명명하며, 유연한 선과 생명력을 한국적 감수성과 현대적 존재론으로 확장하는 고유한 미학을 구축하고 있다.
무아는 1992년 서울에서 태어나 이화여대 동양화과와 대학원에서 석사를 마친 후 미국 로드아일랜드 스쿨오브디자인에서 인테리어 건축과 전시 디자인 석사를 취득했다. 자연의 팔레트에서 영감을 받아 유기적이고 곡선적인 추상 표현을 선보이며 RISD Nature Lab, 국립중앙도서관, 이대서울병원 등에 소장되어 있다. 대표적인 전시로는 개인전《Table of Thoughts》(2024, AtelierLuer Showroom, 시애틀), 주요 단체전은 《So Please Listen and Just Hear Me》(2019, 호림아트센터), 《Friendship Mentor Mentee》 (2019, 한원미술관) 등이 있다.
